FREE AIR CONDITIONERS


Sunset Park Redevelopment Committee, Inc. is pleased to announce that we have partnered with Community Environmental Center for the distribution of FREE and energy efficient air conditioners available to Brooklyn Residents who meet the qualifications as outlined on the flyer. These air conditioners are limited in availability and on a first come, first serve basis.

Please print and post the flyer in public places throughout the community and provide applications as available. Feel free to forward this announcement to your email distribution list. Otherwise, Brooklyn residents interested in receiving an application via email can send a request with their full contact information to KEEPCOOL2011@GMAIL.COM.

In addition to offset the energy load of the air conditioner, qualifying households may also be eligible to receive an energy efficient refrigerator. *Funding for this program, is still under consideration

UPDATED BROOKLYN WORKFORCE CALENDAR

The Brooklyn Workforce Recruitment Calendar for the week of 12/6 is now available for download here.

Health care (HHA, CNA, Direct Care Workers, Billerand Coders, LPN, RNs) dominate the open job inventory this week, but there are amply opportunities as well for trained security guards, retail sales associates and experienced food service workers.

Have a great idea for a community improvement project? Citizens Committee for New York City awards grants of $500 to $3,000 to volunteer-led groups for projects that bring neighbors together and have positive community impacts. Application deadline: January 31, 2011

Citizens Committee also offers Mollie Parnis Dress Up Your School Awards of $500 to $3,000 to support student-led projects that beautify schools or neighborhoods immediately surrounding schools. Application deadline: January 31, 2011

Past award recipients have transformed empty lots into community gardens, organized tenants to preserve low-income housing, increased access to fresh, locally grown food, and created projects that foster understanding and collaboration among youth. NYCFD RECRUITING FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN FIREFIGHTERS

Because of their previous discriminatory hiring practices, New York City Fire Department is under strict Federal court order to fix their numbers therefore NYFD is recruiting HEAVILY in the
African-American communities in order to hire approximately
1,000 new firepersons in the next two years.

College credit requirement has been waived.
NYFD will hire persons with a high school diploma and will pay for these new hires to attend John Jay College to earn the required 60 credits.
NYFD will be holding tutorials classes prior to the test to prep applicants in order to get the highest number of African Americans qualified as possible.

Both men and women should apply.

The base salary starts at approximately $48K
and raises to $100K after 5 years.
Excellent benefits, retirement, security and work schedules.

FREE summer meals for KIDS

School is out, and FREE summer meals are in, from June 29th through August 27th. Any child 18 years old and under can enjoy a free, healthy, and great-tasting breakfast and lunch every weekday at hundreds of schools, pools, parks, New York City Housing Authority complexes, and other locations around New York City. No registration, documentation, or ID is required: your child doesn’t even need to be enrolled in public school to enjoy a delicious free meal. Breakfast will be served from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

FREE IT TRAINING: Ages 18-24

Free IT Training: Ages 18-24.....internship opportunity

If you know any one with a high school diploma or a GED who are between the ages of 18-24 yrs old and have an interest in IT. Refer them to this site http://www.yearup.org to learn more about this free program.
This program asks for a 1 year commitment between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. They provide the student with a stipend and after six months, internships at companies such as Freddie Mac and AOL to name a few.

NYC HISTORIC PROPERTIES FUND

Funding Historic Restorations
Crow Hill has been designated a historic district and therefore property owners wishing to make historic renovations may qualify for the Historic Properties Fund which offers low-interest loans and project management assistance to owners of historic residential, non-profit, religious, and commercial properties throughout the City – mostly in low- to moderate-income communities. Since 1982, the Historic Properties Fund has assisted over 200 buildings. It is one of the largest, private revolving loan funds in the country used exclusively for historic preservation.

YOUNG PROPLE: EARN $$$ HELPING CHCA

For our March meeting, we are going to distribute fliers to all the homes in our neighborhood
and we are looking for young people to help us.

There will be 6 routes:

  1. Pacific/Dean/Bergen between Franklin & Bedford
  2. St. Marks & Prospect between Franklin & Bedford
  3. Park Place & Sterling between Franklin & Bedford
  4. Lincoln & St Johns (inc, St Charles & St Frances) between Franklin & Bedford
  5. Franklin Avenue between Eastern Pkwy & Atlantic (residential only)
  6. North side of Eastern Pkway and both sides of Bedford between Eastern Pkwy & Bergen (residential only)

This can be done ANY TIME between Saturday March 6th - Tuesday March 10th

We are paying $15/route to any RESPONSIBLE 16-22 year old

Block Transformation Grants

Citizens Committee for New York City is pleased to announce a new block transformation grants program. Awardees will receive a $500 cash grant along with expedited support from city agencies for block improvements such as cleaning up a vacant lot, replacing worn out litter baskets, removing graffiti, and replacing worn out street signs. Application deadline: Monday, November 30, 2009.
