Chase is holding its second job fair to reach its goal of hiring 1,000 new customer service professionals in Brooklyn to work in its home lending business.

Hello S.O.S. Supporters! We hope you are enjoying a safe and peaceful beginning of fall. As the leaves change and the air grows cooler, we will continue to fight against gun violence in Crown Heights, and we need your support more than ever. We have some good news to share and some good opportunities for the community to get involved.

-It has been 83 days since the last shooting in the S.O.S. catchment area. Keep it up, Crown Heights!

-We are recruiting immediately for two paid Americorps volunteers. Americorps is a national service program that provides a living stipend and an education award upon completion of one year of service. We are looking for program assistants for YO S.O.S. and S.O.S. -Our youth anti-violence program, Youth Organizing to Save Our Streets (YO S.O.S.,) is now accepting applications! YO SOS is youth organizing training for 14-17 year olds who are interested in ending violence in their neighborhoods. Young Adult Internship Program

The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) is a year long program that provides you with an opportunity to participate in a paid internship, gain real work experience, and learn valuable skills. The hallmark of YAIP is a 14-week internship program in which you can earn up to $2,500. Before and during the internship you will explore career and education options, learn about personal money management, and attend workshops on job-related topics. At the end of the internship, you will receive 9 months of assistance in finding and keeping a job or successfully continuing your education and/or training goals.

To participate in YAIP you must:

·Be a resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City

·Be at least 16 years of age but not over 24 years of age at the start of the program.

You will be unable to participate in YAIP if you:

·Are employed at the time of application

·Are enrolled in an accredited education or job training program (such as school, pre-GED or GED training, job training) at the time of application.

·Have attained an Associate or Bachelor degree.

To apply for YAIP:

·Complete the application and return it to the designated YAIP provider in your community. Acceptance into YAIP is subject to verification of the information that you have provided and an assessment.

Submission of an application and the required documentation does not guarantee eligibility for or placement into the program.

Only one application will be accepted for each individual applicant.

If you are selected for YAIP:

·You will be notified by the YAIP provider to which you submitted your application.

·You must present all the required documentation to the YAIP provider to which your application was submitted (for more details, see attached (‘Required Documents Checklist’)

Creative Outlet is a cultural arts program "dedicated to the physical, mental and spiritual development of the children in our community through the cultural and creative arts."

Building Bridges Bike Day was founded by Council Member Letitia James to work with the public and other community officials, public officials, and advocates to raise awareness about public safety. The event is taking place at the crossroads of three major bike lanes, running lanes, and pedestrian walkways, and is a symbol of the bridge between these diverse groups.

The purpose of the event is to inform the public about safety concerns, and a table and tent for the Building Bridges Bike Day will be located in the center of the Green Market at Grand Army Plaza on this Saturday afternoon. Participants will coordinate between the local riders and pedestrians to create a greater awareness of rules, regulations, and safe streets in New York City.

Starting at 11 a.m. (during peak time of the Grand Army Plaza Green Market), the Building Bridges Bike Day table will feature Council Member Letitia James, Council Member Steve Levin, Council Member Brad Lander, and the initiative run by staff of Council Member James’ Office. Following presentations by elected officials and safety advocates, ambassadors from Transportation Alternatives and Recycle-A-Bicycle will talk to riders at the market and along Prospect Park’s bike lanes. Safety information, maps, other literature and bicycle donation information will be available.

“I’ve started bicycle riding myself this summer, and my hope is that a renewed culture of respect for pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to grow as the outcome of this very important initiative,” said Council Member Letitia.

FREE exercise/stretching/relaxation classes

Classes will be held in downtown Brooklyn for individuals with high blood pressure! In fact, this federally financed study at Long Island University will PAY YOU to attend classes! Come join us and increase your health and decrease your blood pressure.

If you complete the 2x week classes for three months you will receive $120. Classes are 55 minutes long and are not aerobic (you are unlikely to sweat or breath hard). The classes will make you stretch and relax and move your body. They are designed to decrease stress and lower blood pressure.

Classes will be held at Long Island University (Flatbush and Dekalb) and possibly in other locations in downtown Brooklyn. The first class starts September 12th but new classes begin every month after that. Classes will occur in the early evening immediately after work hours.

To be able to participate you must have high blood pressure. If you don’t know if you have high blood pressure we will measure it for you for free. Just contact us to set up an appointment as below.

If you have had a heart attack or stroke, or have kidney disease you will not be able to participate. If you are already exercising 4x a week or more you will not be able to participate.

Part performance, part installation, part gathering place, To Gather; is a collection of performative and architectural artifacts from a cross section of Crown Heights’ social spaces. Bringing a local perspective to urban flux, the artwork raises questions about perceptions of ‘authenticity’ in a rapidly changing neighborhood.
Visitors to the installation in FiveMyles Garage are encouraged to hang out on the stoop, converse in the makeshift pulpit, and relax in the barbershop chair. Erik da Barber will be on hand opening night, as well as hip-hop duo DobleFlo, vocal artist Malesha Jessie, poet Lynne Procope, and comedian Elon James White. For the remainder of the exhibition, the public is invited to linger and use the artwork as their own gathering place.

Peer-to-Peer is a unique, nine-week, experience-based program for people with any serious mental illness who wish to establish and maintain their wellness and recovery.

Taught by a team of trained "mentors" who are living healthy and productive lives with mental illness, participants will learn the tools needed to take control of their own wellness and recovery.

Class topics will include: understanding psychiatric disorders and medication; addressing stigma, discrimination and relationship issues; how to identify telltale feelings, thoughts, behaviors or events that may warn of impending relapse; how to create your own "relapse prevention plan"; and survival skills for working with providers and the general public.

Introduction to Permaculture

Have you been reading about the record flooding of the Mississippi? In case you missed it, the water level at Cairo, Illinois in early May went above the previous record, set in 1937, by two feet!

Several years ago famed permaculturist Geoff Lawton was invited by the Army Corp of Engineers to suggest what could be done to prevent flooding in New Orleans. His response: "You know mates, the problem isn't here, it's up in Minnesota, Illinois and Missouri. You got to slow the water down up there. That's where the problem is." At the time, the Corp of Engineers thought he was crackpot. However, given continued flooding of the Mississippi, Geoff may soon get another chance.

Public Safety:
Without being alarmist, we want people to continue to be aware of crime in the community: there was an attempted rape this past month on a Sunday, at 10:30 p.m. at 679 Sterling Place (between Franklin & Bedford Avenue). The victim was unable to give a description of the man because he approached her from behind and she didn't see his face. Please be alert when you are on the street, especially when you are entering your vestibules.
Burglaries are still up, it is critical that we keep our windows locked, especially those on fire escapes.

Intake Center at the Armory:
A brief update from CBAAR (Coalition for Bedford/Atlantic Armory Reform)
The news regarding the Bedford Atlantic Armory is both good and bad. We have been in contact with the new Commissioner for the Department of Homeless Services: Seth Diamond. In response to our queries he has said that there are no immediate plans to open the intake center for single homeless men at the Bedford Atlantic Armory shelter. However when the intake center at Bellevue closes, the city still intends to open the intake center at the Armory.
We are holding the city off but we must remain vigilant and continue to oppose the intake center. We have requested that DHS keep us informed about the status of the intake center. However there is no guarantee they will do this. Right now and for the foreseeable future, it is imperative that each of us keep an eye on the shelter and report any changes back to us

November Elections
EVERYONE MUST VOTE: This is the most important community effort that you can make in November! It is crucial to the work that the Association undertakes that Crown Heights (and specifically Crow Hill) is seen as a caring and vocal community. The issues that we face are duplicated throughout the City and there are limited resources to deal with them. The communities which get out and vote and make the most noise, are going to be the communities that receive the most attention, it is that simple.
Please be sure to vote on November 2.

Landmarking Crow Hill:
On Tuesday, October 26th the Landmarks Preservation Commission will be holding a meeting at which a group of 13 buildings on Park Place between Franklin & Bedford will be presented for landmarking. Landmark status has already been granted to parts of Prospect Heights and other areas of Crown Heights North, we ask everyone who has an interest in extending this status into Crow Hill to attend this meeting in support.
Again, the meeting is Tuesday, October 26th at 11:35 in the Public Meeting Room of the
Municipal Building: 1 Centre St, 9th floor North in Manhattan.

SOS Peace March:
On Wednesday (tomorrow) there will be a walk sponsored by Save Our Streets beginning at 6 PM at the northwest corner of Utica & Eastern Parkway. Mural Project

We are looking for individual artists and children groups to propose artwork for a panel painting, which will be done the weekend of September 18th to the 19th. Because of their previous discriminatory hiring practices, New York City Fire Department is under strict Federal court order to fix their numbers therefore NYFD is recruiting HEAVILY in the
African-American communities in order to hire approximately
1,000 new firepersons in the next two years.

College credit requirement has been waived.
NYFD will hire persons with a high school diploma and will pay for these new hires to attend John Jay College to earn the required 60 credits.
NYFD will be holding tutorials classes prior to the test to prep applicants in order to get the highest number of African Americans qualified as possible.

Both men and women should apply.

The base salary starts at approximately $48K
and raises to $100K after 5 years.

3rd Annual Kids Day Event

This Saturday, July 24th from 12-5PM, Franklin Avenue between Park Place and Sterling Place will be closed and transformed into a carnival. Let your hair down and feel like a kid again-there’s no doubt that you will have fun. Come celebrate the neighborhood as well as the children within the Crow Hill community. There will be rides, prizes and entertainment at no expense to anyone who wished to attend. The event is paid for entirely through donations from local businesses as well as successful fund raising efforts; About Time Boutique made it a point to involve everyone especially the children residing within the Crown Heights community which was seen in their enthusiastic participation at weekly bake sales held on Franklin Ave. So Show Some love and support and come out to the 3rd Annual Kids Day Event.

The Impact Zone WILL remain on Franklin Avenue
(see next post)

By this time, you probably know a young man was shot in the leg on Franklin Avenue, Saturday afternoon at about 2:30.
What you might not know is that Commissioner Kelly is planning to pull the Impact Zone from Franklin and Nostrand Avenues at the end of the month.
This means we will lose the increased foot patrol that has had such a positive effect on our community since January.
We got the first Impact Zone as the result of a very strong letter writing campaign.
We need to do another immediately!!!
Even while our neighborhood continues to improve, this is the 3rd shooting on Franklin since the middle of May.

We urge you to write a letter asking Commissioner Kelly to keep the Impact Zone on Franklin Avenue. You can either print the PDF version to sign and send, or you can download the .doc to customize with any personal concerns.

PLEASE do it today.

There are over $65 million in unclaimed funds in the 43rd Assembly District alone! Businesses are required by New York State law to surrender inactive accounts to the State. These accounts are known as unclaimed funds. If you are a beginner do not hesitate, The Uptown Skate School will be there from 1-3PM providing any adventurous new comer with the opportunity to pick up a new hobby. All levels of skater skills are invited to come and enjoy the food, exercise, and fun. No registration, documentation, or ID is required: your child doesn’t even need to be enrolled in public school to enjoy a delicious free meal. READ trains and supports high school students to provide structured, research-based one-to-one tutoring to at-risk kindergarten and first grade students in basic reading skills.

READ tutors have ongoing training, and all tutoring is done under the supervision of licensed teachers.
The READ summer programs run 3.5 hours a day for 23-25 days, usually on the same schedule as the Department of Education summer school.
READ tutors earn $8.50 per hour.

Crow Hill has been designated a historic district and therefore property owners wishing to make historic renovations may qualify for the Historic Properties Fund which offers low-interest loans and project management assistance to owners of historic residential, non-profit, religious, and commercial properties throughout the City – mostly in low- to moderate-income communities. Since 1982, the Historic Properties Fund has assisted over 200 buildings. It is one of the largest, private revolving loan funds in the country used exclusively for historic preservation.

Do you ever wish there were more places for grassroots social gatherings? Where people can meet to share random ideas, hard goods, fun services, delicious food, and hearty laughter? Yeah, us too! So we'd like to create one...

LaunchPad: A future homebase for creative minds and curious spirits; a mixed use community space in New York City where people can rally together, trigger ideas, launch projects, and have tons of fun.

"What's the pencil party?", you ask. Well it goes a little like this - you show up and get a pencil. Then you step into the future home of LaunchPad, where all the walls are white. After that it's just some simple math... Your creativity + pencils + white walls * (music + drinks) = pencil party. Fun, right?

The night will also include a silent auction with amazing items donated by various artists and crafters. All winning bids go directly toward the LaunchPad project. And there's a fun twist: the artists/crafters who attract the 3 highest bids in the auction will receive their own LaunchPad exhibit in the near future. The exhibit will include an opening party and a one month display of work.

Haitian Family Resource Center

A new Haitian Family Resource Center is now located at the Bedford Armory, 1579 Bedford Avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

The Center will be a one-stop resource center for families impacted by the earthquake. It will offer Creole speaking translation services, temporary protected status for Haitians in the country illegally as of Jan. 12th, immigration assistance, and help with completing immigration applications, child guardianship and custody services, legal assistance, help in locating family members, mental health services, coordination of volunteer efforts and daily accurate briefings on the status of the relief effort.

The center will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Street Closings

Closure of sections of 5th Avenue and Pacific Street

It is anticipated that beginning on or around Monday, February 1, 2010, the following streets in Brooklyn will be permanently closed:
*5th Avenue (between Flatbush & Atlantic Avenues)
*Pacific Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues)
*Pacific Street (between Vanderbilt & Carlton Avenues)

Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.

These streets are being closed to accommodate the Atlantic Yards project. Northbound traffic on 5th Avenue can use Flatbush Avenue or 6th Avenue to continue north; southbound traffic can use 6th Avenue. Eastbound traffic on Pacific Street can use Dean Street; westbound traffic can use Bergen Street.

To facilitate vehicle circulation, 6th Avenue (between Flatbush Avenue & Pacific Street) and the block of Carlton Avenue (between Dean & Pacific Streets) will become two-way.

These changes necessitate the removal of the Cobble Hill B63 bus stop on 5th Avenue, between Pacific Street & Atlantic Avenue. Passengers can use the existing bus stops on 5th Avenue (at Bergen Street) and on Atlantic Avenue (at 4th Avenue)...
